  A phalanx of Chinese celebrities and thousands of fans attended a memorial service in Shanghai today for Kimi Qiao Renliang, a Chinese actor and singer who took his own life last weekend after a long battle with depression.

  大批中国明星和成千上万的粉丝出席了今天在上海举行的乔任梁追悼仪式,这位中国演员兼歌手在经过长期与抑郁症的斗争之后于上周末选择结束了自己的生命。

  According to statistics from the Mental Health Center at the Chinese Center for Disease Control, 5-6% of the country’s population is suffering from depression at any one time, though only 10% of sufferers will receive medical treatment for their condition. The center estimates that a further 10% of sufferers will eventually commit suicide.

  中国疾病控制中心心理健康中心的统计数据表明,占全国人口5%-6%的人口正遭受抑郁症的折磨,但仅10%的患者可接受治疗。据该中心估计,另有10%的患者最终可能走向自杀。

  Unfortunately it seems that Qiao, in spite of his financial resources and fame, received little support following his diagnosis of depression and chronic insomnia in 2015.

  Throughout the week, both “Qiao Renliang” and “depression” have been in the top ten trending topics on Weibo, and articles about the young actor’s mental health struggles have flooded the newsfeeds of WeChat, a social media app with more than 800 million monthly active users.

  整个这一周,“乔任梁”和“抑郁症”成为微博上十大热门话题之一,而且微信(一款社交媒体应用,月活跃用户超过8亿)上铺天盖地推送着有关这位年轻演员与心理疾病斗争的文章。

  Weibo user @Xinli Zixun Shi Da Xiong Laoshi similarly encouraged people to learn about depression and mental illness.

  “Anyone can fall into depression … let’s learn more about it, don’t let a ‘psychological cold’ turn into a ‘psychological cancer!’,” he wrote.

  “任何人都可能陷入抑郁,让我们更多地了解它,不要让‘心理感冒’变成‘心理癌症!’”他写道。

  State-owned news sites have also dedicated column inches this week to publishing editorials penned by mental health professionals, encouraging people struggling with depression to seek help.

  国家新闻网站本周也发表了由心理健康专家撰写的社论专栏,鼓励人们与抑郁症抗争,寻求帮助。
